Launching in the summer of 2018, the iconic Spanish City will return to rekindle its love affair with the residents and visitors of Whitley Bay. A renaissance of the site is under way with a final goal of reawakening a truly unique visitor destination for the North East of England.
Kymel's exciting plans for the new Spanish City have been inspired by the venues rich history and the needs and wants of both residents and visitors to the area alike.
Originally completed in 1910, ‘The Dome’ became a hub of activity and interest, not only because it was home to many attractions, but because of its stunning architecture and unique design. Almost 18 years after the venue’s final closure, Spanish City will reopen following a restoration project that sees historical features brought back to their former glory and the introduction of new leisure facilities including; family-friendly restaurants, fine dining, tearooms, event spaces and a champagne bar taking residence inside the famous landmark.
Old and new will come together seamlessly as precious memories of times gone by combine with modern experiences to celebrate a truly amazing venue.
About the Project
North Tyneside Council released plans to regenerate Spanish City and Whitley Bay alongside a coastal development plan. Spanish City forms an integral part of the programme with the public calling for the site’s iconic dome to be brought back to life. The restoration comes after North Tyneside Council invested £4m, successfully secured £3.47m of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and gained a Coastal Communities Fund grant of more than £2.5m, bringing the total investment to almost £10m.
Work currently underway includes the restoration and repair of many previously lost original features and the addition of modern extensions, as well as a new rear entrance and the refurbishment of the famous ‘dancing ladies’. The ceiling of the central space has also been removed from the ground floor, allowing visitors to see the dome in all its glory from inside for the first time in over 100 years, whilst railings have also been reinstated on the surrounding balcony. Seaward-facing full height windows will be fitted in keeping with the original Spanish City, revealing incredible views of the coast and St Mary’s Island. Stunning architecture will be further showcased with beautiful interior design, and details including vast columns and terrazzo flooring.
Located inside the iconic dome and specialising in fish & chips and seafood dishes, the legendary Trenchers, originally based in Whitby and operating since 1980, will open its second venue within the building. Renowned across the north of England for its family-friendly atmosphere and legendary fish & chips, Trenchers have enjoyed success for almost 40 years, most recently being shortlisted as one of the top six fish & chip restaurants in the UK.
Expect traditional fish & chips of the highest quality cooked in beef dripping (gluten free/ vegetarian also available) and fresh seafood including oysters, crab, prawns and grilled fish. There will also be a dedicated children’s menu, gluten free, meat and vegetarian options and opportunities to hold parties and private functions.
Harking back to the glory days of the Dome, Valerie’s Tearoom will be the perfect place for afternoon tea, a coffee with friends or a heavenly brunch. With access directly from both the seafront and rear entrance, Valerie’s will serve a wide-range of café-style dishes including omelettes, eggs benedict, pastries, fresh coffee and various teas served in a traditional style. The venue will be open from breakfast throughout the day and to-go options will be also be available.
Spanish City Waffle and Pancake House
Something the younger members of the family will enjoy, along with the young at heart and those with a sweet tooth! The Spanish City Waffle & Pancake House will combine traditional ice-creams with American-inspired waffles, pancakes and crepes. Located just off the beach area, the bright and airy venue will be adorned in pastel tones and the perfect place for a family-friendly treat.
The Champagne Bar
The Champagne Bar will be situated on the first floor and will benefit from floor to ceiling windows, stylish interior design and incredible sea views. Created as the perfect place to enjoy sophisticated pre, or post dinner drinks or to meet with friends. The Champagne Bar will serve a range of spirits, champagnes, cocktails, wines and beers with a tapas menu also on offer.
1910 – Steak and Seafood
1910, named in reference to the opening date of Spanish City, takes a key spot on the seaward facing side of the building and benefits from floor to ceiling windows and panoramic views. The fine-dining restaurant will take inspiration from the Crab & Lobster in Asenby, a two AA Rosette restaurant also operated by Kymel. The group are keen to replicate the high-quality and stylish dining that ‘The Crab’ has become famous for with sumptuous dishes such as lobster, steaks, oysters, scallops, soufflés, stunning desserts and an extensive champagne and wine menu taking centre stage. The perfect place for a romantic date or a special occasion
St Mary’s Lighthouse Suite
The new Spanish City will also boast an incredible function space, St Mary’s Lighthouse Suite, with opportunities for both intimate gatherings and larger events with a capacity of up to 200. The space will be available to hire privately creating the perfect place for weddings, birthdays, special interest group gatherings and corporate events with a dedicated kitchen, bar and toilet facilities creating privacy for guests.
The St Mary’s Lighthouse Suite will be linked directly to both the mezzanine level of the dome and the Champagne Bar and will have views across the bay to the lighthouse itself, perfectly showcased with floor to ceiling windows and vast skylights.
Along with those hiring the space privately, Kymel’s events team will also be arranging a number of public events both within in the function space and elsewhere in the building. With plans for Christmas fairs, cinema screenings, exhibitions, party nights and festivals to name a few.
The team at Spanish City will ensure that every wedding is as special as the couple themselves. The dedicated function room, St Mary's Lighthouse Suite, will provide a truly unique and unforgettable wedding venue that your guests will be talking about for years to come.
Adjoining the luxurious Champagne Bar and rooftop terrace, the spaces will work together to play host to civil ceremonies, champagne and canapé receptions, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions for weddings of various sizes. Photographers and guests will be delighted by picture perfect moments as full-length windows and open-air spaces showcase the unique and stunning coastal scenery surrounding the venue.
Food and drink options will be plentiful with a dedicated kitchen and bar within the function space and exclusive facilities for guests. Details on packages and open days will be available in 2018.
Spanish City offers something distinctly different to those seeking space for corporate events. Commanding views across the coast provide an inspiring backdrop whilst ample parking facilities, specialist AV equipment, access to WiFi and a dedicated team allow attendees to get straight down to business.
Outstanding food and drink options are available onsite with dedicated facilities within the conferencing area. Alongside a main room, the Champagne Bar and surrounding balcony can be used as a break out space and internal sliding walls ensure full flexibility.

Trenchers Restaurant & Takeaway
A family orientated restaurant serving high quality fish and chips and a range of other popular dishes. Trenchers will be open from Lunch through until 9pm each day. Situated in the ground floor of the Dome, this part of the business comprises of a 160-seater restaurant and separate takeaway unit accessible from the main promenade.
Assistant Manager – Salaried dependent on experience – 45 hours per week
Our Assistant Manager position is most certainly a hands-on role. Leading by example, you will work closely with your team to ensure that we are offering the best service standards and meeting guest expectations. You will be responsible for ensuring that any food served meets with our quality standards and that staff are trained to the required levels. This is not an entry level position and candidates should have previous management or supervisory experience within a restaurant environment. This is a full-time position.
Supervisors – Hourly rate dependent on experience
Supervisors will work closely with the management team to ensure that the customer service levels are met and where possible exceeded. You will be in charge of leading a team during your shift. You will be responsible for table / reservation management and you will regularly be acting as host, seater & greeter for visitors to the restaurant. These positions would be ideal for someone who has previous waiting experience and who is ready to take a step up in their career or experienced restaurant supervisors. Part Time and Full Time Positions are available.
General Waiting & Bar Staff – Rate of Pay in line with National Minimum Wage
General waiting and bar staff are required to take food orders, serve food & drinks, process guest bills and ensure that guest service levels are met. Full training will be provided but previous waiting experience would be an advantage. At times the restaurant will feel fast paced and you need to be able to keep calm under pressure. Our waiting staff will be the face of the business and as such it is important that candidates are comfortable interacting with guests and can use their intuition to anticipate guest needs. Casual, Part Time and Full-time positions are available.
Waffle and Pancake House
Accessed from the promenade our Pancake and Waffle house will serve a host of sweet treats to it customers. This is a compact unit with indoor seating for approximately 24 customers at any one time and additional seating outdoors. A counter service will operate in this restaurant and we expect there to be a mixture of takeaway and sit-in orders. We will offer quality products including premium ice creams, crepes, waffles and beverages. We expect that this outlet will be open from 12 noon until 7pm daily.
Supervisors – Hourly rate dependent on experience
Chosen candidates will support the unit manager with the day to day operation. As supervisor you may be opening up the unit in the morning or closing the unit at the end of the night. Supervisors will be responsible for ensuring our quality standard levels are met at all times. You will have a friendly and approachable personality with a self-motivated attitude to work. Full time and part time positions are available.
General Waiting & Counter Staff - Rate of pay in line with National Minimum Wage
Welcoming customers, taking orders, preparing orders and processing bills will all form a part of this role. You must be comfortable speaking to guests and have the energy and drive to ensure that our standards are met at all times. Casual and Part time positions available.
Conference and Banqueting
Spanish City offers a large function suite which can seat up to 140 guests for a sit-down meal. The function suite is situated on the 1st floor of Spanish City and has panoramic views over the sea and coastline. It will host, meetings & events, weddings and other special celebrations. The function space can be divided into two to provide separate dining / meeting space as required. Hours of operation will flex quite substantially on a weekly basis based on the levels of business booked.
Assistant Banqueting Manager – Hourly Rate dependent on experience
Supporting the Operations Manager, the chosen candidate will be responsible for ensuring the function suite is set up and prepared in advance of events as they come in. You will liaise on a weekly and daily basis with the Wedding and Events co-ordinator to formulate delivery plans for the week ahead. You will assist the Operations Manager in the planning of rotas and staff training. On the day, you will work closely with the customers to ensure their requirements are met as laid out in the function sheets ensuring timings are always adhered to and catering requirements are correctly fulfilled. As Assistant Manager, you will direct your staff and prioritise tasks to improve department efficiency. Previous supervisor or management experience in Banqueting is essential for this role. Experience in delivering Weddings is desirable. Part and full-time hours will be considered.
Banqueting Supervisors – Hourly Rate dependent on experience
Taking direction from the Assistant Banqueting Manager and Operations Manager the chosen candidates will work with a small team to deliver the conference and events requirements for the venue. Hours of work may vary considerably on a weekly basis as per the business on the books. The chosen candidates will be responsible for delivering a whole host of events from weddings, to funeral receptions, to Christmas Parties, to Annual Festivals. We are looking for adaptable, friendly and motivated personalities for this role. Previous banqueting experience is preferred for this role. Casual and Part time positions are available.
Banqueting Waiting & Bar Staff – Rate of pay in line with National Minimum wage.
We will need casual and part time staff to assist with the delivery of our functions and events. Ideally, we are looking for friendly and approachable team members who will always go out of their way to offer exceptional service. You need to be comfortable carrying plates, clearing tables and creating a relaxing atmosphere for our guests. Our busiest times are likely to be over the weekends so it is essential that you can work over these times.
1910 & Champagne Bar
Our Champagne Bar is on the 1st Floor of Spanish City overlooking the sea front. It has a mixture of relaxed and dining seating and will be the place in Whitley Bay to go for a glass of champagne or cocktail. Open from 12 noon until 10pm daily, our champagne bar will offer light bites and speciality beverages.
1910 takes its name from the year the Spanish City was built. This 80-cover restaurant will be our relaxed fine dining venue open weekly from Thursday to Sunday for Lunch and Dinner. It will offer spectacular panoramic sea views of the Whitley Bay coastline including St Mary’s Lighthouse. Our aim is to offer high quality dishes, where possible using the best North East ingredients, we’ll be offering an impressive wine list to match!
Head Bar People & Mixologists – Hourly rate dependent on experience
We are looking for Head Bar People to assist with the smooth running of the Champagne Bar. We are looking for people with a bit of flair. Candidates who have previous mixology experience are essential as Cocktails will be a big part of the offering. You will be responsible for training other bar staff ensuring good consistency regardless of whether you are on shift or not. Ideally, we are looking for a candidate who has a genuine interest and previous experience working in a high-quality bar environment. Full Time and Part Time Positions considered.
Head Waiter / Waitress – Hourly rate dependent on experience
Working at 1910 the chosen candidates will feel comfortable with providing the best table service, you will be the ‘host’ for customers visiting. You will be recommending wines to go with menu items, anticipating guest needs and most importantly ensuring that every guest has the perfect experience. The head waiting staff will be responsible for instilling standards with the other staff members ensuring a high level of consistency and competence. You will be responsible for managing table bookings maximising diners without compromising standards. Previous waiting experience in a fine dining restaurant is essential for this role. Part Time and Full-Time positions considered.
General Waiting Staff & Bar Staff – Rate of pay in line with national minimum wage
We need experienced waiting and bar staff to assist with the operation of 1910 and our champagne bar. The chosen candidates will be good multitaskers as you will be required to work both behind the bar and in the restaurant. You will have a friendly personality and have impeccable presentation standards. You will be comfortable with the provision of the most popular drinks and must have natural enthusiasm to learn more about the food and drink we offer. Valerie’s Tea Room
As refined as tearooms come, Valerie’s tearoom will provide high quality afternoon teas, light bites, coffees and other beverages. Quality is the key word here. The 80-cover tearoom situated on the ground floor just off the main promenade will offer the best levels of service and the highest quality products. There will be a takeaway element for people wanting to pick up a coffee whilst on their way but the focus will be on quality breakfasts, the afternoon tea and light lunch experience. Valerie’s will be open from 7am to 6pm daily.
Assistant Managers – Hourly Rate dependent on experience
The Assistant Managers will be working closely with the General Manager to ensure that consistent high standards are always in place. It will be a hands-on role, leading by example you will be greeting and seating guests, taking orders and clearing tables. Previous Barista experience would be preferred. You may be opening the unit first thing in the morning or closing the unit at night. The chosen candidates will assist the manager in rota management ensuring maximum efficiencies without compromising on standards. We are looking for friendly, welcoming and organised members of staff. Previous experience working at supervisor level within a similar sized operation is essential. Part Time and full-time positions will be considered.
Supervisors – Hourly Rate dependent on experience
Our Valerie’s Supervisors will work alongside the management to ensure consistent high standards are delivered. They will be in charge of a small team during their shift. Our supervisors, will be hands on, multi-tasking and motivated to lead the team by example. These positions would be ideal who has had a few years’ experience working in a similar sized tea room or someone who is already a supervisor. Part Time and Full-time positions considered.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about offering the best customer service. Whilst you don’t need to have any previous experience for this role someone who has worked in a hospitality environment would be preferred. You will be working closely with your other team members taking orders, making coffees, serving food and processing guest bills. Full training will be provided. Venue Administrator – Salary Dependant on Experience
Our Venue Administrator will be responsible for reconciling daily banking’s and prepare daily / weekly / monthly financial reports. In addition, the chosen candidate may be involved in some planning aspects of Spanish City supporting the Events co-ordinator with a calendar of events and helping to promote the venue through social media channels. Maintenance Staff – Salary dependent on experience
This is a multi-tasking role. In addition to completing a daily and weekly maintenance schedule you will be assisting in the setup and breakdown of our event space. We need a proactive thinker who will plan work ahead where possible but be able to react to issues as they occur. Full time and Part Time positions considered.
Apprentice Staff, Customer Service Based – Rate of Pay in line with Apprenticeship rate
Starting from August 2018, this is a fantastic opportunity for candidates that want to get into hospitality and customer service. During the 18-24-month apprenticeship you will work in all front of house areas. You will work and gain experience in 4 different kitchens at Spanish City during your apprenticeship training which would also involve 1 day per week studying at college.
